Frequently asked questions
Getting started
What is Commonplace?
Commonplace brings attendance, books, grades, children’s work, family notes, and everyday plans together. When you need a portfolio, transcript, or report, those pieces are already in one place.
Does Commonplace create lessons or choose curriculum?
No. You choose what and how you teach. Commonplace helps organize the books, plans, notes, and work that grow from the learning that is already yours.
Who is it for?
Commonplace is currently designed for homeschool families. It supports multiple students and teacher or student logins within one household.
Do I need a credit card to try it?
No. The 14-day trial starts after you verify your email, and no payment method is required.
How long does setup take?
Guided setup walks you through students, the school year your family will share, and the tools you want to use. You can revisit earlier steps and edit a saved school year without leaving setup. Add curriculum, grades, photos, and other details whenever they become useful.
Flexibility
Will Commonplace work with our homeschool style?
Commonplace does not require a particular curriculum, schedule, grading system, or homeschool philosophy. Families can use fixed schedules, loops and rotations, day or hour attendance, formal grades, simple completion tracking, or only the tools that suit them.
Do I have to use every feature?
No. Start with the pieces that help your family. Explore features lets you search for tools and settings whenever you need them, including options hidden from your menu. Opening a search result does not turn a feature on.
Can I use it for more than one child?
Yes. You can view the whole family together or filter information by student. Shared learning can remain family-wide.
Can my children log in?
Yes. You choose which tools each student login can use. My Day shows that student’s own tasks and progress, with one task in focus and a plan they can revisit. Teacher accounts retain full access.
Can another parent or teacher have access?
Yes. Family accounts can include additional teacher logins as well as student logins.
Records and requirements
Does Commonplace guarantee compliance with my state’s homeschool law?
No software can decide every family’s legal obligations. Commonplace helps you keep many commonly requested records—such as attendance, hours, subjects, courses, grades, reading, progress, and documents—but you should follow current guidance from your state or qualified adviser.
What reports can I create?
Commonplace includes attendance records, grade reports, reading lists, progress reports, course-of-study documents, detailed gradebooks, checklists, portfolios, transcripts, and consolidated record packets.
Can I track both attendance days and hours?
Yes. School years can use a day or hour goal, and attendance entries can include instructional hours and core-subject hours when needed.
Can I attach work samples or documents?
Yes. Keep photos, files, audio, and links beside the work or activity they belong to, then choose which pieces to include in a portfolio.
Billing, privacy, and support
How much does Commonplace cost?
Commonplace is $9.99 per month or $79 per year for the family workspace and all current features.
Can I cancel?
Yes. After cancellation, access continues through the end of the paid billing period.
Can I export my information?
Yes. Commonplace provides data and media exports so your records remain portable.
